Dan-Buoys

A danbuoy could make all the difference when searching for a person overboard... getting the right one is a necessity!

The type of danbuoy you choose depends on the type of cruising you are planning and to a certain extent, your boat.  The primary use for a danbuoy is of course to mark a man overboard, but it can also be used to mark anything that falls over the side.

There are essentially three types of danbuoy.  These are inshore/coastal, offshore/ocean and inflatable.

Inshore/Coastal

The inshore or coastal type is ideal if you are staying relatively close to land, but in an ocean swell, would not take long to disappear from view.  They sometimes come with light, but these are often vulnerable.  They can be difficult to stow on board, must people simply attach a suitable piece of domestic waste pipe to the pushpit.

Offshore/Ocean

Normally telescopic, they can measure over five metres in length.  More often than not they either come with or have an option light fitting.   They are far more visibly and durable than the inshore/coastal versions.  A must for ocean cruising.

Inflatable

Ideal for vessels which really do have a storage problem, they are usually bearly as good as the standard inshore/coastal versions.  They are however far better than having nothing at all and they are by far the easiest to stow and deploy.  They are available with or without a light.  They require regular servicing.
