Power Systems

Power on vessels is becoming increasingly essential in this electronic age.

Being able to keep those batteries charged is more important than ever.

Whilst there are now plenty of charging options, factors such as weight and noise mean that it is important to choose a charging system that suits your requirements.  Most long distance cruisers have a variety of methods for charging the batteries and it is therefore important to consider the system as a whole.  Try and work out how much power you are likely to use – this will give you some idea of the capacity that you will require.  Most electronic and electrical devices give power or current ratings.  Obviously you will also need spare capacity in case the charging devices are not working to their full potential and also bear in mind that the batteries themselves may not be 100% effective.

If you are starting from scratch, then you will also have to decide whether to choose a 12 or 24 volt system, there are advantages to both.  24 volts is generally used for larger craft due to the lower losses incurred in cables.  12 volts is now virtually the industry standard and most 12volt equipment is cheaper.
