  STORM-BAG

The Easily Deployable Storm Jib for Roller Reefing Forestays

"When the Storm-Bag was tested it was found quite easy to put into position and to hoist, and the double sail system sets well, so will be efficient in extreme conditions."

Peter Bruce
 Adlard Coles' Heavy Weather Sailing

An exciting new concept from France…. The Storm-Bag is by far the easiest way to rig a storm jib on a forestay equipped with a roller reefing headsail.

The double-sided sail is deployed straight from its bag, which is wrapped around the forestay with sheets and halyard attached.  A tug on the sheets followed by the halyard and it is deployed… what could be simpler?

The Storm Bag has several advantages over a conventional storm jib.

  • Considerably Simpler, Easier and Safer deployment
  • Compact Stowage
  • No need to install a Baby Stay, or removable inner forestay.
  • More efficient sail due to double skin construction
  • Reduces likelihood of genoa unfurling in high winds
  • All sheets etc. Included.

Fix the STORM-BAG around the reefed genoa…

Pull on the sheet to open the bag…

Hoist the sail using the spinnaker halyard…

Sheet in and sail on.

STORM-BAG Construction

Michel Sauget designer of the Storm Bag explains....

“Since the 1st January 2005, a storm jib ceased to be a requirement of the French regulations – this has been replaced by a legal requirement for a skipper to equip his or her vessel responsibly. Even when the regulations did require storm jibs, there were no specifications or definitions (sail area, construction methods, size of reinforced sections, lines etc.).*

“When developing the Storm Bag, we decided to adopt the highest specification.  Information was gathered from racing rules, sailmaker’s catalogues, internet websites, chandlery catalogues and the like and from this we defined our Storm-Bag range.

For a given sail area, the actual sail is double skinned.  The head and tack corners are doubled, as are their reinforcement areas as well as the number of clews.  It would therefore be logical to assume that even though the load on the sail cloth will not be halved, it will be much lower.  For safety reasons we opted for a cloth only slightly lighter than a traditional storm jib of the same size.

The larger sizes (8,10 and 13m²) are made in two 8oz layers (340TNF Fluo made by Dimension Polyant) and the two smaller sizes in two layers of 6oz Dacron (Ocean 655 made by Bainbridge).”

*The same principle applies to UK commercial regulations.
