Water Makers

The decision as to whether or not to buy a water maker is not an easy one...

If you are planning an Atlantic crossing it is not absolutely necessary to have one as it is always important to carry enough water to complete your voyage just in case your water maker develops a fault.  Therefore is it necessary to have one at all.  The answer is obviously no.

There are a number of reasons why you might want to carry one.  It all stems from the reason why we cruise at all.  It is supposed to be a pleasurable experience and fresh water showers certainly make life on board far more pleasurable.   The Atlantic crossing is only the beginning… what when you are having the time of your life anchored alone in a Caribbean bay, when you realize that you don’t have enough water.  What if you take on plenty of water and then set sail on a weeklong voyage, only to find that it is all contaminated!  The general opinion is, if you can afford one without compromising safety, then it is probably a good idea.

There is a huge range of water makers on the market and the type you buy may well depend on the limitations of your boat.   Most water makers are based on reverse-osmosis technology, which is now becoming more and more efficient.  They can be modular, compact or even towed, all with their own advantages and disadvantages.

Modular

A modular system  involves mounting the individual components, that makes up the desalination plant, around the boat, resulting in a complete system.

Advantages

·        Can be spread around the boat to maximize use of available space.

·        Easy to replace component parts.  Non original parts often compatible.

·        Easy to customize or upgrade system to suit requirements.

 Disadvantages

·        Prone to poor installation – more difficult to install.

·        Vulnerable

·        More confusing to operate

Compact

Compact systems are becoming increasingly popular.  All the individual components that make up the desalination plant are in one unit.

Advantages

·        Easy to install.  Less likely to suffer from poor installation.

·        More reliable due to lack of long hoses.

·        Less confusing

Disadvantages

·        Genuine parts often required.

·        Bulky to locate on board

Common problems with most water makers

High power consumption

Air bubbles in system at higher boat speeds.
