Man Overboard

(MOB) Recovery Devices

The problem of how to recover a person who has fallen overboard is not a new one... but having the right equipment and a well trained crew could save lives!

It is unlikely that anyone who has spent any time in the water could assist in their own recovery to any great extent so boarding ladders are simply not an option, whilst it is also unlikely that they would be able to tie a rope around themselves.  Weather conditions could easily make matters worse.  It is therefore essential that you plan for such an eventuality and equip the vessel and more importantly, train the crew.  Practice, practice, practice! Finding the MOB is just the beginning!

There are many devices on the market.  The traditional method of tying a foresail along the toe rail and using a halyard to slowly winch the person back on board can be effective, but problems generally occur when trying to get the sail to sink and an appropriate sail is never to hand. The Tri-Buckle is a purpose made device, which works on this principle, but is made of a strong but perforated fabric to ensure effective sinking.  It can be stowed on a rail in a special pouch so that it is always at hand.

The simplest form of MOB recovery device is a lifting sling that is designed to fit under the arms.  A halyard can then be used to winch the MOB on board.  There is no doubt that this device is of use, but ther is a risk of slipping from the sling.

The Jonbuoy is an effective MOB recovery device and doubles as a danbuoy and can increase a MOBs chance of survival by allowing them to lift most of their body out of the water.  It is effectively a high-visibility inflatable raft, which includes a lifting harness so that the MOB can be, lifted clear of the water with a spare halyard.  An inflatable pole with a flag ensures that it can be seen from a distance.  It comes in a self-inflating canister that can be easily mounted on a rail for quick deployment.  A remote deployment kit is available which allows the unit to be deployed from the cockpit or wheelhouse at the flick of a switch.
